At the end of SMEDB200 and SMEDB306, students will have acquired suitable knowledge of cellular metabolism and its regulation
Objectives
The SMEDB200 and SMEDB306 teaching units aim to allow the student to:
The SMEDB200 and SMEDB306 teaching units complete the study of metabolism begun in the SVETB113 teaching unit. The description of the main pathways of intermediate metabolism is accompanied by examples describing various biochemical dysfunctions and their metabolic repercussions.
The following chapters will be covered in SMEDB200:
-Principal metabolic pathways (Glycolysis, krebs cycle…)
- Carbohydrate metabolism
- Pentose Phosphate Pathway
- Lipid and ketone metabolism
- Signaling and Regulations of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and
Compulsory practical work is organized within the framework of the SMEDB200 teaching unit. They include 5 sessions: colorimetry, enzymatic kinetics, purification of lysozyme by ion exchange chromatography, separation of lipids by thin layer chromatography and genotyping of the BVDV virus by PCR and enzymatic restriction.
First session
The overall grade for the SMEDB200 teaching unit will take into account the mark obtained in the theoretical exam and the mark obtained during the practical work exam with a weighting of 17/3 (17 for the theoretical part, 3 for the practical part ).
Theoretical course: written exam including multiple choice questions and/or open ended questions.
Practical work: written exam including exercises in calculations, reflection and interpretation of results. The grade may be adjusted according to the results of the entrance tests (described below), the student's behavior in the lab and the quality of the reports submitted at the end of the session.
Second session
Students who will have to take the theoretical exam in the second session will be exempted from the practical work exam if they have obtained a grade equal to or greater than 10/20 in the first session. The grade for the teaching unit will be calculated using the same 17/3 weighting and will include the practical work exam grade obtained in the first session.
Students who will have to take the theoretical exam in the second session will also have to retake an exam on the subject of the practical work if they have obtained a practical grade of less than 10/20 in the first session. The grade for the teaching unit will be calculated using the same 17/3 weighting and will include the practical work exam grade obtained in the second session.
In case of failure in the second session.
Students who will have to represent the teaching unit in a subsequent year and who have obtained a practical work exam mark equal to or greater than 10/20 will be exempted from practical work. The grade they will obtain for the teaching unit will be the grade obtained during the theoretical exam only. However, if the student requests it at the start of the semester, they will be able to retake the practical work exam. In this case, the 17/3 weighting will be applied with the new practical work exam mark.
Students who will have to represent the teaching unit in a later year and who have obtained a practical work exam grade of less than 10/20 must retake the practical work exam but without redoing the exercises in the lab. A revision session will be organized during the semester to bring them up to speed.
Organization of the practical work
Practical work is mandatory. Students are requested to respect the timetables established by the course coordinator. In the event of a time conflict or long-scheduled appointments, students must contact Ms. I. Hamer (isabelle.hamer@unamur.be) to make a group change. No changes will be accepted without prior authorization from the assistant. In the event of absence for unforeseen medical reasons, students must send a copy of the medical certificate to Mrs. I. Hamer as soon as possible, in any case within the week of resumption of activities. On this occasion, a catch-up session will be organized. Absence from a single practical work session will be penalized by a loss of 6 points out of 20 on the practical work exam grade. If a student does not show up for two or three practical sessions, they will not be able to register for the theoretical exam of the teaching unit, neither in the first nor in the second session.
Before each practical session, students will have to carefully read a pdf file containing theoretical notions and an experimental protocol and then answer a few questions relating to this subject. The pdf file and the questionnaire will be available on WebCampus one week before the practical session. The student who does not answer the questionnaire before coming to the laboratory will be penalized. Wearing a clean lab coat is mandatory.
