From the heritage of a civilization to the foundation of our culture
The bachelor's degree in ancient and modern languages and literature stands at the crossroads of two complementary fields - Latin and French - and studies them from a linguistic and literary perspective.
The program gives you access, in the original language, to the founding texts of our culture, from Antiquity to the Renaissance, in Latin, and from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Era, in French.

The advantages of studying Latin-French at UNamur
Linguistic analysis skills
In both Latin and French, you'll develop your grammatical analysis skills through lectures and practical exercises.
From initiation to mastery of the language
An initiation course in Latin enables you, if you haven't studied it in secondary school, to gradually acquire a mastery of the language. On the other hand, courses in written and spoken French introduce you to the practice of the language in a university context, to equip you with real expertise in written and oral communication.
In-depth training in the sciences of antiquity
The study of ancient Latin literature is complemented by training in the sciences of antiquity (heuristics, history, art history and archaeology) and an introduction to Greek, whose literature provided the model for so many Latin works. In this way, you can grasp Roman civilization in all its richness.
Two literatures in mirror
Through literature classes and explanations of Latin and French authors, you put into dialogue the development of Latin letters after Antiquity and the evolution of French literature since the Middle Ages.
A university research project
In 3rd year, you complete an end-of-cycle project that constitutes your first introduction to research in linguistics, literature or cultural history. In particular, you can personally study early works (from the 16th century onwards) from the University Library's Precious Reserve.
Additional activities
(lectures, meetings with authors, visits to museums and exhibitions, trips...) are offered throughout your training.
