Preparatory courses

Discover university teaching and life at UNamur while revising the subjects essential for your future training.

To get your first year of study off to a good start, the University of Namur is offering preparatory courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and English during the last two weeks of August. Of these, physics and chemistry are compulsory, and you can choose two other subjects from mathematics, biology and English. In addition to the four disciplines taken, three activities are organized:

  • seminars on the methodology of university work;
  • a presentation of the first-year English course;
  • a guided tour of the university site, the Faculty and the library.

Students from blocks 2 and 3 will also show you around the university campus, your Faculty and the extra-academic activities organized in Namur.

Are your methods appropriate?

To pass Block 1, you need to develop effective strategies.

Working methods sessions are organized to familiarize you with university learning techniques:

  • taking clear and comprehensive notes;
  • summarizing and synthesizing material;
  • understanding material in depth;
  • memorizing large amounts of information;
  • managing your time during class and block periods;
  • organizing your work;
  • anticipating teachers' requirements.

In addition, if you encounter difficulties in your study method, the cellule interfacultaire d'appui pédagogique offers you individual follow-up. Throughout the year, an advisor is on hand to review your study methods and techniques and help you improve them.

And if you run into difficulties?

The University of Namur offers remediation sessions integrated into your timetable and individualized help from a coach.

From the first week of classes and throughout your first year, remediation sessions are organized and integrated into your training: this is the "Tremplin" operation.

Course delegates relay any difficulties you encounter to teachers. Remedial sessions and exercises are then proposed for course content less well understood by students. In concrete terms, every Wednesday, part of the morning is devoted to reviewing the main scientific subjects and the methodology of university work. From the start of the year, you can also benefit from personalized help. A coach guides you through your studies, offering a listening service, advice, interpretation of results, and redirects you to other resource people.

How can you prepare for the exams?

Study regularly, acquire good methods, but also get to know the teachers' requirements and their way of questioning.

In Block 1, formative assessments are organized at the beginning of November. and written quizzes are organized in three main subjects. You receive your corrected copy and the teachers then orally explain the expected answers to their questions and the grading criteria used.

These tests do not play a part in the grades that will be awarded at the end of the year. They are intended solely as a training tool to help you assess the level of your teachers' expectations and the effectiveness of your work. Personalized assistance, or in small groups, is then offered to you to analyze the results obtained in these formative assessments, discuss your working method or go into greater depth in certain parts of the subjects.
