Doelstellingen

Upon completion of the Teaching Unit, students will be able to:

  • Describe sedimentary rocks in the field and the structures that affect them
  • Keep a clear field notebook (usable by a third party), structuring and categorizing their observations
  • Interpret their observations, other field surveys and diverse information in order to design geological maps, cross-sections and logs representing the underlying organization of the rocks
  • Read and comment on an existing geological map, describing rocks and tectonic structures (folds, faults). Discuss possible applications and uses of the map

Inhoud

The lectures cover the following topics: introduction to geological field techniques, structural measurements and interpretation, introduction to stratigraphy and structural geology, preparation of geological maps and accompanying documents.

6 lab sessions on reading and designing geological maps, sections and logs (+ 1 or 2 optional lab sessions for reviews)

One day of fieldwork organized on a Saturday (generally in October or November)

Evaluatiemethode

  • Single exam (for the theory and labs) including a few theory questions and exercises similar to those encountered during the labs (70% of final grade)
  • A report on the analysis of a geological map with oral presentation (20% of final grade)
  • Two graded lab/fieldwork exercises (10% of final grade)
