Inhoud

This course aims to understand Spanish literature in its historical dimension by examining how the great aesthetic periods, situated in specific socio-cultural contexts, conceptualise the treatment of the literary character differently in the geographical area currently known as "Spain". This chronological journey will thus lead from the collective hero of the epic to the dehumanised character of the vanguardias, via the anti-hero of the picaresque, the mythical Don Juan of Romanticism or the typical character of the costumbrismo. The aim is to offer a theoretical approach to the notion of the literary character, but also to give an account of the specificities of Spanish literature. Throughout this literary history, various sessions of text explanation will be organised in order to analyse the concrete formal devices through which each text constructs its characters (intertextuality, rhetorical devices, actantial system, etc.).
