The overall aim of EELVB295 English II is to achieve overall competence level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The following are extracts from the various main indicators and criteria; please refer to the relevant pages of the Companion Volume with new descriptors for further details :
Reception
Production
A variety of production strategies (e.g. planning, clearing, checking and correcting) will be used to achieve the objectives of Level B1.
Interaction
Several interaction strategies (e.g. turn-taking, cooperating, clarifying) will be used to achieve the above objectives.
It is important to note that not all of these skills will be addressed proportionally. Indeed, although the skills of oral production will be focused on during the lessons, the other linguistic aspects will be dealt with actively or passively, to a lesser extent, though.
Overall B1 level, with a focus on oral production skills.
A series of themes related to the wider business world will form the starting point for the activities in each lesson, with a general introduction followed by more in-depth exercises. The next lesson will often begin with a brief review of the previous week's theme. The activities, most of which mobilizing oral skills, will be accompanied by receptive activities (e.g. texts and videos) available on WebCampus.
In 2020-2021, the topics covered were: socializing, student jobs, homeworking, internships, businesses, entrepreneurship, CVs, trends, corporate social responsibility. As the EELVB295 course has been completely 'revamped' in 2021, some of these topics are likely to change, especially since the overlap of five lessons with the EELVB395 English III course will require the creation of five new topics to avoid redundancy for students who have taken level II in 2020-2021.
There is no syllabus.
Slides featuring the activities and feedback will be posted after the lessons.
The final score (out of 20 marks) will be calculated on the basis of an average that takes into account the following components:
This distribution of weights for the average will be valid for both the first and the second session. This means, therefore, that a student who has not attended the lessons would start with a loss of 15% of his/her final grade, since it is impossible to attend the lessons afterwards.
If the paper is submitted late, and/or is incomplete, this work will be penalized with a zero.
If the portfolio is submitted late, and/or is incomplete, this work will be penalized by a zero.
On the other hand, failure to submit the paper and/or portfolio will not only result in a zero for these parts, but the student will also not be allowed to take the oral exam, as there is no material to discuss.
