Doelstellingen

The aim of the course is to provide the student with methodological tools for interpreting iconographic sources. The aim is to identify the specificity of such documents (through knowledge of the codes specific to visual communication) and to weigh their complementarity with the "classic" sources of historical criticism.

Inhoud

The course, structured around a chronological axis, will present various iconographic documents (sculptures, posters, caricatures, photographs, documentaries, films, television programmes, etc.). Using concrete examples, the aim will be to place these images in their context, to present their formal characteristics, and above all to identify the interest of such documents for a better understanding of the different periods of history.

Evaluatiemethode

The written examination will include questions of analysis (images not seen in the course), synthesis and accuracy. This course is subject to continuous assessment.
