At the end of this course, the student should know the different uses of plants and isolated substances in the different therapeutic categories and their pharmacological properties. He/she should be able to explain the therapeutic modifications between natural products and their hemi-synthetic derivatives according to the structural modifications. He/she should also know the Latin name and be able to specify the used part of the plant whose use should be known. In addition, he/she should be able to name the phytochemical class of the structures to be drawn and recognised.

Doelstellingen

To train future pharmacists in the use of substances of plant or animal origin, whether they are used as such or as isolated molecules in therapeutics or as a source of inspiration in pharmacochemistry.

Inhoud

1. Phytotherapy The first part will focus on phytotherapy (interest and limits) with notions concerning both traditional medicine and the most recent developments in phytomedicines. The classification will be done according to the pharmacological activities. The course will also deal with the comparison of food supplements and medicines. 2. Plants and pure substances The second part will be devoted to the great classics of pharmacognosy with also an approach by indication. A description of the often toxic plants and the substances that have been isolated from them will also be presented.

Evaluatiemethode

Written examination with open questions and possible MCQ. The evaluation of the practical work of micrography intervenes for 10% of the final mark.
