To give the notions of microbiology (virology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology) which allow to understand the physiopathology, the epidemiology, the diagnosis, the prevention and the treatment of the main microbial affections in human pathology.

Inhoud

The objectives of the course are to provide students with a basic understanding of microbiology (virology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology) which will enable them to understand the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the main microbial diseases in human pathology. The proposed teaching will consist of two parts, one with general aspects of microbiology and the other with pathologies by anatomical site. Virology will be treated separately from the other branches of microbiology by including the same approach: one part devoted to some aspects of fundamental virology and one part devoted to specific medical virology where individual viruses will be discussed. The most frequently encountered microorganisms in human pathology will be described as well as those with substantial morbidity in our population. The student in pharmaceutical sciences and biomedical sciences should have acquired: • A thorough knowledge of the main microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites encountered in human pathology. • A mastery of biological diagnostic techniques: this constitutes an essential scientific basis for future bio-engineers who may be required to develop new clinical biology diagnostic tests. Moreover, with the emergence of diagnostic tests sold in pharmacies, this knowledge will also be essential for students who are destined for the pharmacy, enabling them to better fulfil their role as advisors. • A general knowledge of treatments: which will be sufficient for students in biomedical sciences. Other courses will reinforce the knowledge of therapeutics necessary for the future pharmacist's practice.

Evaluatiemethode

The proposed assessment method will be a written examination in the form of MCQs. The exact modalities of the assessment are subject to change when the examination timetable is being drawn up, depending on practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in case of illness/force majeure/emergency with a placement, or because of the health situation related to the coronavirus.
