Awakening curiosity about the Earth and the natural world: a key to meeting tomorrow's challenges.

Studying geology means developing a solid foundation in physics, chemistry and biology to understand the Earth, from its internal dynamics to surface processes and their interactions with our environment and human activities.

The bachelor's degree in geology is a balanced training program that introduces students to fieldwork while equipping them with mathematical and computer tools. It prepares students for geological professions such as soil and subsoil characterization prior to construction projects (geological expertise), mining exploration, environmental management and protection, and fundamental research.

Thanks to their interdisciplinary training, geologists are ideally placed to carry out a wide range of functions that value a rigorous scientific approach to solving complex problems (research and development, project management, consultancy and education).

During the bachelor's degree, we provide personalized support to our students to help them choose one of the many masters courses offered at other Belgian and European universities in the field of Earth and environmental sciences. To broaden horizons, it is also possible to take a four-quarter Erasmus course at KULeuven or Institut Potytechnique UniLaSalle-Beauvais (France) from the third year of the cycle.

I was looking for a job that kept me on the move, where office work alternated with field work and laboratory analysis. The theoretical and practical courses given at UNamur, combined with regular learning in the field such as quarry visits and geological mapping, gave me the skills and reflexes of a good geologist.

The advantages of geology at the University of Namur

  • immersion in the field of geology from Block 1 common with geography;
  • practical training oriented towards the professional field (career visits, presentations by professionals...) and including lots of field activities;
  • close contact with teachers;
  • strong university scientific foundations (chemistry, physics, biology...) enabling a better choice for the master's program in Belgium or abroad;
  • The possibility of considering an ERASMUS semester in block 3, either at KULeuven or Institut Polytechnique UniLaSalle in Beauvais (France).

Are you hesitating between geology and geography?

No problem. The first block is common to both courses. You can therefore choose the program that suits you afterwards and move towards a course either focused on the Earth sciences, where the management of mineral resources is apprehended in space and time (bachelor's degree in geology), or situated at the crossroads of the natural sciences and the humanities, where human-environment-society interactions are studied in detail (bachelor's degree in geography).
