Du latin…
Aucun prérequis n’est exigé pour la formation en latin, même si une connaissance basique préalable est vivement conseillée. Si vous ne l’avez pas étudié dans l’enseignement secondaire, un cours d’initiation est spécialement prévu pour vous. Si vous avez déjà un niveau avancé, vous pouvez suivre directement les cours de Lecture de textes ou d’Explication d’auteurs latins, ce dernier étant consacré autant à l’analyse littéraire et historique qu’à l’étude de la langue.
Dès la première année, vous vous spécialisez en langue latine. Au programme, cours théoriques, exercices de version et de thème, analyse linguistique, étude de la littérature latine et initiation aux instruments de la recherche.
Pour comprendre le contexte historique et culturel dans lequel s’inscrit la littérature latine, une connaissance de l’Antiquité est nécessaire. Vous êtes ainsi formés à l’histoire, à l’archéologie et à l’histoire de l’art de l’Antiquité gréco-romaine.
La littérature latine s’étant développée essentiellement sur le modèle de la littérature grecque, votre formation comprend également un apprentissage des fondements de la langue grecque. Une initiation progressive est prévue si vous n’avez pas suivi de cours de grec dans l’enseignement secondaire.

En linguistique, vous apprenez à analyser et à décrire la langue française dans ses différents aspects (phonologie, morphosyntaxe, sémantique) et à comprendre comment elle a pris forme au cours de l’histoire pour atteindre son état actuel. Les cours de pratique du français écrit et oral vous permettent d’acquérir l’excellente maîtrise de la langue française indispensable à ces études.
En littérature, vous êtes initiés à la lecture et à l’analyse de textes, à l’histoire des thématiques et des genres littéraires et à l’étude des auteurs français et francophones, du Moyen Âge à l’Époque contemporaine.
Plusieurs cours établissent des ponts entre les domaines latin et français, notamment par l’étude de l’évolution du latin vers les langues romanes et des états plus anciens de la langue française.
Vous partez sur de bonnes bases
- vous disposez d’une excellente maitrise du français, notamment de l’orthographe ;
- vous avez un réel « goût du texte » et vous appréciez la lecture attentive ;
- vous êtes capables de rigueur et de précision dans l’analyse d’un texte ;
- vous aimez rechercher de l’information et élaborer une réflexion complexe.
Méthodes d’enseignement

Cours, exercices pratiques, travaux individuels… tout est mis en œuvre pour que vous maitrisiez les langues latine et française, leur histoire et les cultures qu’elles véhiculent.
Pour l’apprentissage du latin, vous suivez des cours en grand auditoire et des cours de spécialisation en petit groupe. Ces derniers sont accompagnés de séances d’exercices régulières qui vous forment progressivement à la version et au thème. Tous les exercices font l’objet d’une séance de correction commentée par l’enseignant.
Les cours de pratique du français écrit et oral incluent des séances d’exercices régulières. La réalisation des exercices proposés est une condition indispensable pour garantir votre apprentissage.
L’histoire des littératures latine et française fait l’objet de cours théoriques, qui sont complétés par des lectures (œuvres latines en traduction, romans, pièces de théâtre, nouvelles…) et des analyses personnelles.
En 3e année, vous réalisez un travail de fin de cycle sous la supervision directe d’un enseignant ou d’une enseignante du département de Classiques, de Romanes ou d’Histoire, qui vous guide dans le choix du sujet, la recherche et la rédaction. Ce travail vous prépare à la réalisation autonome de travaux de recherche scientifique.
En fin de bachelier, vous avez la possibilité de découvrir une approche différente de l’enseignement universitaire et de profiter d’une expérience culturelle, voire linguistique, grâce au programme « Erasmus ».

Le bachelier en langues et lettres anciennes et modernes donne accès automatiquement, en Communauté française, au master en langues et lettres anciennes et modernes.
Au cours de ce deuxième cycle, vous optez pour une finalité qui vous prépare plus spécifiquement à l’enseignement (finalité didactique), à la recherche (finalité approfondie) ou à une autre spécialisation professionnelle dans le domaine du livre, de l’édition, de l’informatique et de la linguistique, du journalisme…

Les métiers des experts en latin-français
Même si les diplômés en langues et lettres anciennes et modernes se destinent très souvent au métier de professeur de latin et de français, ils peuvent valoriser leurs compétences dans bien d’autres domaines professionnels, parfois inattendus.
Enseignement et formation
Nombreux sont les diplômés qui partagent leur expertise et leur passion pour le latin et le français avec des élèves de l’enseignement secondaire.
Mais beaucoup interviennent également dans d’autres contextes de formation face à des publics variés. On les retrouve dans les Hautes Écoles, dans des centres de langues privés, dans des organismes de formation continuée, dans des associations actives en insertion socioprofessionnelle ou parfois à l’intérieur de certaines grandes entreprises.
Dans le cadre d’accords bilatéraux conclus par la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, le WBI (Wallonie-Bruxelles International, l’administration publique chargée des relations internationales) coordonne un réseau de formateurs en français dans plusieurs pays européens et même en Louisiane. Des dizaines de jeunes diplômés passent ainsi quelques années à l’étranger comme lecteurs de
langue et lettres françaises dans une université ou une école de traducteurs-interprètes, comme formateurs en lycée bilingue, ou encore comme assistants de langue française dans une école secondaire et contribuent à y promouvoir la culture française de Belgique au sens large (littérature, histoire, système institutionnel…).
Monde culturel et de l’édition
Tout l’éventail des métiers du livre s’offre aux diplômés en langues et lettres anciennes et modernes, depuis la correction d’épreuves jusqu’à la direction de maison d’édition, en passant par la promotion ou la traduction littéraire.
Ces professions s’exercent au sein de maisons d’édition, en bibliothèque, en librairie, en centre de documentation ou comme indépendant. Grâce à leur formation ouverte sur les grands courants artistiques, les diplômés peuvent également gérer des projets culturels dans des institutions comme les Maisons de la culture, les théâtres…
Médias et communication
Une ouverture au monde socio-économique ou une spécialisation dans un domaine culturel particulier peuvent permettre aux diplômés de mettre leurs compétences au service des médias et de la communication et de devenir journalistes, critiques littéraires, rédacteurs dans des journaux
d’entreprise, attachés de presse, responsables de projet dans la publicité…

Certains diplômés poursuivent une activité de recherche, souvent complétée par des tâches d’enseignement, en Belgique et parfois à l’étranger. Les universités et des fonds publics (par ex. le FNRS) peuvent financer la réalisation d’un doctorat. Les docteurs en philosophie et lettres ont ensuite la possibilité d’enseigner à l’université.
Les diplômés en langues et lettres anciennes et modernes pourront orienter leurs recherches dans des domaines divers : la linguistique (principalement historique), la littérature latine, néolatine ou française, l’histoire culturelle, de l’Antiquité à nos jours. Leurs compétences sont particulièrement reconnues pour l’étude de la Renaissance et des Temps Modernes, qui s’appuie dans une très large mesure sur une documentation en latin abondante et encore très rarement traduite…
Une vie sociale à déployer
Au moment de décrocher un premier emploi, la personnalité des candidats est souvent aussi importante que leurs diplômes universitaires, d’où l’importance de maintenir sa curiosité en éveil tout au long des études, de se construire une vie sociale riche, par exemple en s’engageant dans le monde associatif. Les jeunes diplômés doivent s’attendre à suivre un chemin de carrière parfois sinueux, surtout dans les premières années…
Mais c’est souvent dans ces détours que les personnalités créatives, curieuses et celles qu’anime l’esprit d’entreprendre découvriront le métier qui les passionnera. Certains diplômés complètent leurs études par une formation ultérieure (communication, langues, informatique, gestion, etc.), ce qui peut faciliter leur insertion professionnelle dans des secteurs d’activité spécialisés.
