Dès le début de votre formation, vous êtes aux prises avec les différentes interrogations et positions que les êtres humains ont exprimées pour réfléchir leur existence, leur rapport aux autres et au monde.
Vous découvrez la philosophie à travers l’histoire et de manière thématique.
- L’approche historique étudie les questions philosophiques dans les versions successives données par les grands penseurs, des origines grecques à l’époque contemporaine.
- L’approche thématique isole et traite les grands problèmes : le raisonnement en logique, l’action en éthique, la réalité humaine en psychologie et en anthropologie, la réalité ultime en métaphysique.
Pour développer votre sensibilité à d’autres perspectives, vous abordez différentes disciplines : les langues (anciennes et modernes), l’histoire des civilisations, le phénomène religieux, la sociologie et la psychologie. L’étude et l’approfondissement de ces disciplines développent vos capacités d’adaptation et votre polyvalence.
La filière que vous choisissez vous permet de croiser le questionnement philosophique avec d’autres domaines de la science et de la culture :
- La filière « Lettres, art et histoire » : pour approcher la philosophie à travers son histoire et son environnement culturel ;
- La filière « Sciences sociales et communication » : pour maîtriser les aspects sociaux et économiques des problèmes philosophiques contemporains ;
- La filière « Sciences exactes » : pour orienter votre formation philosophique vers les questions posées par les sciences et réfléchir à leurs incidences anthropologiques, éthiques et politiques ;
- La filière « Double bac philosophie – droit » : pour obtenir le diplôme de bachelier en droit en plus du diplôme de bachelier en philosophie.
En fin de cycle de bachelier, à travers les cours d’auteurs et les séminaires de questions approfondies, vous apprenez à formuler une problématique philosophique. Vous développez également vos compétences de recherche, de discussion et d’expression argumentée de votre pensée.
Votre bachelier se conclut sur un travail de fin d’études qui vous encourage à philosopher par vous-mêmes.

Vous partez sur de bonnes bases

Méthodes d’enseignement

Cours, travaux pratiques, séminaires, participation à des activités de recherche... tout est mis en œuvre pour développer vos compétences d’analyse, de réflexion et d’argumentation.
Grâce aux exercices et aux travaux personnels, vous apprenez à maîtriser les matières, à mettre en œuvre la méthodologie philosophique et à découvrir les instruments de travail indispensables à l’approche des textes et à la dissertation.
L’horaire des cours vous assure de larges plages de travail personnel propices aux lectures indispensables à l’acquisition de la méthodologie philosophique. Ces lectures sont facilitées par l’accès direct à la bibliothèque du séminaire de philosophie, très complète en histoire de la philosophie, anthropologie, philosophie politique et sociale, esthétique, éthique, métaphysique…
Tous les cours théoriques sont enrichis par la lecture commentée d’articles ou d’extraits d’ouvrages philosophiques.
La plupart des cours de spécialité se font sous forme dialoguée, à la manière d’un séminaire. Vous pouvez ainsi vérifier votre bonne compréhension de la matière et la préciser. Dans la même optique, des répétitions et interrogations sont proposées régulièrement.

Pour vous aider à les relever, l’UNamur vous accompagne dans le développement de vos compétences disciplinaires, méthodologiques, humaines… avec le soutien de nombreux professionnels.

Après le bachelier : le master
Le bachelier en philosophie donne accès automatiquement au master en philosophie organisé dans les universités de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles ou à l’étranger (aux conditions que fixent les universités organisatrices).
Si vous avez choisi la filière « Sciences sociales et Communication » durant votre bachelier, vous pouvez obtenir des dispenses lors d’une inscription ultérieure aux études de bachelier en sciences politiques ou de bachelier en information et communication à l’UNamur.
Par ailleurs, l’UNamur organise un certificat d’études complémentaires en philosophie pour approfondir certaines problématiques philosophiques telles que les grandes questions d’éthique et de société de notre monde technologique, les questions du sens et de l’existence, la philosophie des sciences...
Finalement, le département de Philosophie de l'UNamur participe au master de spécialisation en cultures et pensées cinématographiques (coorganisé avec l'Université Saint-Louis Bruxelles) ainsi qu'au master de spécialisation en philosophie et théorie politiques (coorganisé avec l'ULB et l'ULiège).

Les métiers des philosophes
Une palette de compétences riche et variée
Les offres d’emploi mentionnent rarement l’intitulé « philosophe ». Pourtant, et contrairement à plus d’une idée reçue, les compétences développées par les études en philosophie se révèlent particulièrement précieuses dans le monde du travail.
Une enquête menée auprès des diplômés en philosophie de Namur met en lumière les atouts des philosophes face au monde professionnel. La formation des philosophes développe des capacités d’analyse et de réflexion qui, tout en offrant une aisance dans l’argumentation, permettent d’appréhender de manière globale des situations complexes. Cet aspect de la démarche philosophique est un atout certain, tant lors des entretiens d’embauche que dans les moments de prise de décision sur le terrain professionnel. Les philosophes sont également amenés à développer un solide esprit critique : ils ne se contentent pas de « faire » ; ils « pensent ce qu’ils font ». Parmi les autres compétences pointées dans l’enquête, relevons encore la vaste culture générale et la curiosité intellectuelle, autant d’outils qui permettent aux philosophes d’apprendre rapidement et donc d’évoluer professionnellement.
Une part importante des diplômés en philosophie poursuivent leur formation initiale par un diplôme complémentaire (en gestion, relations internationales, développement, etc.) ou une formation intensive en langues (anglais, néerlandais), ce qui peut faciliter l’insertion professionnelle dans des secteurs d’activité spécialisés.
Principales figures des philosophes dans la vie professionnelle
Philosophie et enseignement
Bon nombre de philosophes partagent leur savoir, leur passion et forment la capacité argumentative de leurs élèves. Ils enseignent en école secondaire et supérieure la morale, la religion, mais également parfois d’autres cours relevant des sciences humaines.
La philosophie n’est pas que théorie : elle se présente également comme une « pince » qui permet d’appréhender d’autres savoirs de manière critique. En ce sens, les philosophes sont aussi ceux qui peuvent « apprendre à apprendre ». Il n’est dès lors pas étonnant qu’on les retrouve comme formateurs dans le secteur de l’éducation permanente, par exemple en alphabétisation.
Notons en outre que les débouchés dans l’enseignement s’élargissent avec la création d’un cours de « Philosophie et citoyenneté » dans l’enseignement secondaire officiel.
Philosophie et recherche
Certains diplômés poursuivent après l’obtention de leur diplôme une activité de recherche, souvent complétée par des tâches d’encadrement, en Belgique ou à l’étranger. Les universités et des fonds publics (par ex. le FNRS) financent la réalisation d’un doctorat. Les docteurs en philosophie peuvent ensuite enseigner à l’université.
Philosophie et société
La bioéthique, le développement durable, la santé publique, l’éducation à la citoyenneté : autant de thématiques d’actualité au sein desquelles il est demandé aux philosophes d’intervenir, et qui touchent au cœur même de la question du sens de la vie et des finalités de notre société. La place des philosophes est généralement celle de conseillers auprès des personnes chargées de prendre des décisions dans ces différentes matières (directeurs d’hôpitaux ou de mutualités, responsables politiques, fédérations industrielles, etc.), ou encore de formateurs.
Les philosophes disposent d’un recul critique et de capacités communicationnelles qui leur permettent d’agir comme médiateurs dans la gestion des conflits humains. Ils peuvent en faire leur métier. Au sein de l’entreprise, les philosophes pourront notamment évoluer comme conseillers en ressources humaines (sélection et recrutement, accompagnement de carrière).
On retrouve également des philosophes employés à des titres divers au sein d’ASBL ou d’ONG (Organisations Non Gouvernementales), notamment en tant que coordinateurs ou chargé de communication. Relevons également la possibilité de travailler dans le domaine du journalisme et aussi dans les différentes administrations publiques.
Philosophie et créativité
Une façon de s’inscrire dans le monde professionnel peut également être de créer sa place. Autrement dit, l’absence d’une case telle que « profession : philosophe » pousse certains à proposer de nouvelles structures, et donc à inventer leur propre métier.
Ainsi, plusieurs diplômés ont réussi à traduire leur passion pour la réflexion philosophique dans une activité professionnelle. On peut entre autres citer l’animation d’ateliers philosophiques pour enfants, la création de librairies « cafés-philo », le métier d’écrivain…
Une vie sociale à déployer
Au moment de décrocher un premier emploi, la personnalité des candidats est parfois aussi importante que le diplôme universitaire… ; d’où l’intérêt de maintenir sa curiosité en éveil tout au long des études, de se construire une vie sociale riche, par exemple en s’engageant dans le monde associatif. L’ouverture d’esprit couplée à un sens critique aigu feront des philosophes des personnes aptes à assumer des responsabilités importantes dans la vie active.
