Chaire Francqui 2025 - Explainable Software Engineering

Explainable Software Engineering in the Public Sector The field of software engineering seeks to devise theories, methods, tools, and techniques that support the development, operation, and evolution of the digital infrastructure modern society relies on. While the software engineering capabilities have advanced substantially over the past decades, it remains challenging to deliver high quality systems in a timely and cost-effective manner. Government system in particular have a weak reputation in this respect.To better understand why, we analyze 125 complex software projects in the public sector in The Netherlands. The projects are described in public reports published by the Advisory Council on IT Assessments (AcICT), which advises the Dutch parliament and cabinet on riks and chances of success in complex Information Technology (IT) projects. The projects span a time period of 10 years, represent a total budget of over 14 billion Euros, and cover such areas as tax collection, social security, pensions, health, traffic control, defense, or water management.We study these reports through the lens of "explainability", focusing on supporting decision making. Furthermore, we reflect on current advances in software engineering, including modern software testing and large language models, in addressing current software engineering challenges. Défense publique de thèse - Movsun KUY

This thesis presents a novel approach to address the challenges of deploying and managing Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in resource-constrained and multi-domain environments. The proposed solution leverages a Raspberry Pi clusterbased approach for NFV deployment in resource-constrained environments, combined with a deployable Sidecar VNF (S-VNF) coordinator for multi-domain NFV orchestration.The thesis demonstrates the feasibility of integrating NFV into edge computing environments by successfully deploying and managing Network Services (NSs) on a Raspberry Pi cluster. The S-VNF coordinator facilitates efficient cross-cloud VNF deployment and management while ensuring security and interoperability.While the obtained deployment and scaling delays in the testbed setup were significant due to the bare-metal deployment process used, the proposed solution remains valuable in environments where service maintenance time is a critical factor.By automating deployment and scaling, organizations can minimize the impact of service maintenance time, improve customer satisfaction, and enhance system resilience. Moreover, the solution enables NFV to be deployed effectively in edge environments, providing benefits such as reduced latency and improved network performance.Overall, this thesis contributes to the advancement of NFV by providing innovative solutions for deployment and management in challenging environments. Théâtre d'ombres | Autour des textes du philosophe Günther Anders

Notre temps est confronté à un paradoxe : jamais les catastrophes n’ont autant saturé nos horizons d’attente, et jamais pourtant n’ont-elles semblé plus lointaines. Dans de nombreuses œuvres, le cinéma s’est saisi du thème de la fin du monde en représentant l’angoisse grandissante de l’humanité face à la venue prochaine d’un événement cataclysmique. Si ces fictions nous semblent aussi crédibles, c’est parce qu’elles reproduisent à l’identique la passivité qui nous est imposée face au devenir catastrophique du monde : tout se passe comme si notre destin était déjà joué d’avance.C’est depuis cette contradiction qu’entend se formuler Et si nous sommes désespérés ? afin de raconter l’expérience de la catastrophe, d’éprouver les modes de vie qu’elle engage, et de susciter l’engagement politique qu’elle requiert.Entre théâtre documentaire, fiction d’apocalypse et conte philosophique, la pièce explore ainsi notre présent à travers un dispositif scénique minimal, conçu pour dédramatiser les images spectaculaires, qui hantent nos imaginaires. Ainsi, des projecteurs, des ombres chinoises, des enseignes lumineuses, désorientent le regard tandis qu’une voix d’outre-ombre suscite une écoute clandestine. Dans le brouhaha de l’Histoire, seule compte la parole de ceux qui parviennent à la transmettre.Günther Anders (1902 – 1992)Philosophe, moraliste, fabuliste, militant, Günther Anders, qui fut aussi le premier mari d’Hannah Arendt, nous lègue une œuvre considérable, à la hauteur des questions qui travaillent notre époque. Comment prendre la mesure de ce qui nous arrive ? Comment vivre sans espoir des lendemains ? Comment agir dans les temps de la fin ? Obtenir instantanément la traduction en langue des signes (LSFB) d’un mot écrit en français : voilà ce que permet MOSI (Du mot au signe). Ce nouvel outil est le fruit d’une collaboration entre l’Université de Namur, l’asbl École et Surdité et l’asbl LSFB, soutenue par la Fondation Roi Baudouin.

🐺 Loup, qui es-tu ?

Nous avons le plaisir de vous inviter, le jeudi 19 juin 2025, à la conférence de Julie Duchêne portant sur les résultats du projet « Loup, qui es-tu ? ».Dans le cadre de cette conférence, Julie Duchêne (Docteure en Histoire UNamur/FNRS FRESH) présentera les résultats de sa thèse consacrée à l’histoire du loup sur les territoires wallons et luxembourgeois du 18e au 20e siècle, éclairant l’histoire du loup en Wallonie d’un jour nouveau. Quelles étaient les images du loup véhiculées par les sources durant cette période ? Quelles ont été les politiques mises en place par les différents États pour combattre cette espèce, jusqu’à mener à sa disparition au début du 20e siècle ? Et, finalement, qui étaient les loups qui peuplaient nos contrées à cette époque ? Enfin, Julie partagera avec le public les résultats des analyses paléogénétiques menées sur une douzaine de loups naturalisés conservés dans les musées, institutions et lieux partenaires aux quatre coins de la Wallonie, un projet qui a constitué une première en Belgique, à la croisée de l’histoire et de la biologie. Nous espérons vous retrouver nombreux lors de cet événement. Deux chercheurs de l'Institut du Langage, du Texte et de la Transmédialité (NaLTT) viennent d’obtenir des financements du F.R.S – FNRS à la suite des appels dont les résultats ont été publiés en décembre 2024.Composé de chercheurs en linguistique et en littérature, l'Institut NaLTT constitue un espace interdisciplinaire de recherches diachroniques et synchroniques portant sur les pratiques communicatives verbales et multimodales qui se manifestent dans, sont formées et/ou régulées par la culture et la société.

À la fin de l'évènement, un jury détermine quels sont les projets qui ont retenu leur attention et qui ont donc gagné la compétition. Une initiative du CSLabs Le Computer Science Labs est une junior entreprise issue de la Faculté d’Informatique de l’Université de Namur.
