Educational Research(ers) in 2026 : Epistemic and professional histories and futures
Résumé : This talk explores competing conceptions of educational research and the enduring debates that shape the field. It signposts historical understandings of the nature, scope, and epistemic status of educational research, considering its emergence as an academic discipline and its evolving relationship with teaching and teacher education. It then places education research in the context of current research policy trends. Drawing on evidence from high-profile controversies in the UK (engaging policymakers, academics, practitioners, and media actors), the presentation analyses why educational research has remained subject to recurrent public contestation. It explores the methodological, political, and normative fault lines that underpin disagreements about quality, impact, relevance, and authority, and considers the narratives advanced to reframe the field’s purpose and legitimacy. Rather than treating contestation solely as a symptom of fragility at the crossroads of professional jurisdictions, the talk also considers how such disputes have functioned as sites of epistemic clarification and value articulation, and thus as a condition of the field’s intellectual development. The talk concludes by inviting critical reflection on what it means to be and to become an educational researcher in 2026: what forms of expertise, accountability, and public responsibility the role entails, and how doctoral formation may prepare educational researchers to navigate intellectual plurality, institutional constraints, and competing expectations.
