Open a bank account
If your income (scholarship or salary) is paid by a Belgian sponsor, you must open a bank account in Belgium. It's more convenient to pay in all stores and supermarkets. There are special conditions (free of charge) for young people (under 26 or PhD students). Get more details at the branches.
Generally, a package includes a current bank account, a savings account and Internet banking. You will receive a bank debit card. To apply for a credit card, you need to contact the bank: they may ask you for additional documents.
There are several banks where you can open a bank account in Namur:
Documents required to open a bank account:
- Certificate of registration from the town hall (carte de séjour, annexe 15, annexe 19, annexe 33...) ;
- employment or subsidy contract (to indicate how much you earn per month) ;
- identity card or passport.
For security reasons and in order to update the data concerning you, it is recommended that you present your residence permit to your bank when you are in its possession.
When you decide to leave Belgium, you must return your bank card to the bank and close your bank account.
