Water and the ecological transition: the world and Wallonia

The IPCC warns of the growing impact of global warming on water, with more frequent droughts and floods threatening global supplies. By 2050, 42% of river basins will be severely affected, and flood damage could quadruple in the event of 4°C warming. Although they bear little responsibility, the most vulnerable populations suffer the worst consequences. In Wallonia, recent climatic disasters and water pollution illustrate the stakes. To raise public awareness, an event is being organized in Charleroi with debates and screenings.Program17:00 | Introductory session Head of UNESCO Belgium Mr Aurélien Dumont, Secretariat of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, World Water Situation17:40 | Screening of the film "H2O, water, life and us: the Emergency"18:30 | Break18:45 | Lectures and debate Prof. Dr. Marnik Vanclooster (U.K.). Public thesis defense - Movsun KUY

This thesis presents a novel approach to address the challenges of deploying and managing Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in resource-constrained and multi-domain environments. The proposed solution leverages a Raspberry Pi clusterbased approach for NFV deployment in resource-constrained environments, combined with a deployable Sidecar VNF (S-VNF) coordinator for multi-domain NFV orchestration. The thesis demonstrates the feasibility of integrating NFV into edge computing environments by successfully deploying and managing Network Services (NSs) on a Raspberry Pi cluster. The S-VNF coordinator facilitates efficient cross-cloud NFV deployment and management while ensuring security and interoperability. While the obtained deployment and scaling delays in the testbed setup were significant due to the bare-metal deployment process used, the proposed solution remains valuable in environments where service maintenance time is a critical factor.By automating deployment and scaling, organizations can minimize the impact of service maintenance time, improve customer satisfaction, and enhance system resilience. Moreover, the solution enables NFV to be deployed effectively in edge environments, providing benefits such as reduced latency and improved network performance.Overall, this thesis contributes to the advancement of NFV by providing innovative solutions for deployment and management in challenging environments. The proposed framework has the potential to enable the widespread adoption of NFV and drive the development of new network services.Directed by Prof. Laurent SCHUMACHER and Prof. Sokchenda SRENG.In front of a jury composed of:Prof. Wim VANHOOF, President, University of NamurProf. Laurent SCHUMACHER, Co-Promoter, University of NamurProf. Sokchenda SRENG, Co-Promoter, ITC Graduate School (Cambodia)Prof. Florentin ROCHET, Internal Member, University of NamurProf. Johann MARQUEZ-BARJA, External Member, University of AntwerpProf. Bruno QUOITIN, External Member, University of MonsProf. Raveth HIN, External Member, ITC Graduate School (Cambodia)You are cordially invited to a drink, which will follow the public defense. For good organization, please give your answer by Thursday March 20 by means of this link.Contact: Daelman Isabelle - isabelle.daelman@unamur.be

Show - L'île en Mottes de Beurre

This is the story of several departures. Those we choose, those we undergo. Between necessities, ruptures and exiles, ten young people confront stories of flight and wonder what maps our life paths.L'Ile en motte de beurre is a collective creation that explores the act of leaving a place, a person, a time in one's life. Through the intersecting narratives of ten characters, the show plunges into the intimate and the universal: fleeing a flooded city, learning independence through Erasmus, leaving a home where you no longer exist, detaching from a childhood friendship, confronting the failure of miscalculated autonomy. The show plays with temporal breaks, fragmented memories and echoes between stories. L'Ile questions our own relationship to departures in a mosaic of narratives. This project proposes a collective journey in which each spectator is invited to ask: what departures have shaped me?"Admission price: UNamur members €5 / outside €7 Sign up

Public defense of doctoral thesis in Physical Sciences - Nicolas Roy

SummaryIn 2025, machine learning continues to revolutionize various scientific fields, with major implications in physics, particularly photonics. The integration of advanced machine learning algorithms has enabled significant advances in the design and control of photonic systems, improving their efficiency and performance. These advances are essential for the development of communication, imaging and quantum computing technologies. However, physics research presents many challenges that go beyond simple performance measurements: identifying patterns and building analytical models is often just as crucial. In this thesis, we apply computational intelligence tools, in particular heuristic optimization and neural networks, to develop data-driven approaches to solving various tasks in physics. Although data-centric, our approach remains rooted in physics, always seeking to understand the physical phenomena underlying the algorithms. The results of this thesis cover a wide range of applications, from the design of complex metasurfaces and diffraction gratings to the analysis and interpretation of spectral data. We have also successfully developed an optimizer capable of learning and adapting to the problems encountered, particularly in physics. This key tool in our arsenal outperforms state-of-the-art methods in our applications. In particular, it has enabled the design of a coronagraphic phase plate for exoplanet imaging, with a performance 25% better than the best previous solutions. We have also designed a compact, all-dielectric beam deflection device, operating efficiently for all polarizations, reaching a maximum efficiency of 90%. Starting from a purely data-driven design, we were able to extract and validate an analytical model based on the behavior of an echelle lattice, providing a physical understanding of its operation. In addition to simulation-based tasks, we also processed experimental data, developing an animal origin classifier for scrolls, capable of distinguishing three animal species with 90% accuracy. This tool offers a non-invasive method for conservators and historians wishing to analyze fragile historical materials.Jury members Prof. Michaël LOBET (UNamur), PresidentProf. Alexandre MAYER (UNamur), SecretaryDr. Charlotte BEAUTHIER (CENAREO)Prof. Benoît FRENAY (UNamur)Prof. Olivier DEPARIS (UNamur)Prof. Denis LANGEVIN (Université de Clermont Auvergne)Prof. Hai Son NGUYEN (Ecole Centrale de Lyon)

Conference - A BUMP hidden treasure: the Bergeyck archives

Entitled "A hidden treasure of the BUMP: the Bergeyck archive (13th-19th centuries)", this lecture by Romain Waroquier (Doctor of History - Researcher at centre PraME de l'UNamur) will lift the veil on the riches of the de Bergeyck fonds, a family archive that illustrates, in an unprecedented way, the history of the seigneury of Dhuy, which has been passed down in the same family, heir to the Counts of Namur, since the 13th century.Among these documents are several rare items hitherto unknown to historians, such as a polyptique foncier of which there is only one equivalent in the Mosan area. Exploiting these archives opens a window onto the rural and seigniorial realities of the Middle Ages in this northern corner of the province of Namur that was the seigneury of Dhuy, and whose history Romain Waroquier will retrace for us.Welcome one and all!"
