Following the Reform of Initial Teacher Training (RFIE) in 2023, things have changed to become a teacher.

At the University of Namur, it's the Faculté des sciences de l'éducation et de la formation (FaSEF), the first Faculty in Belgium to be specifically dedicated to teacher training, that manages these bachelor's and master's programs.

The FaSEF also looks after the Centre de Formation Continue pour les Enseignants et les Formateurs (CEFOPEF) in the field of teaching and coaching, organized within the Salle des Pros.

Bachelors of education

To become a teacher from reception to secondary 3 (sections 1 to 3), students must now follow a 4-year curriculum (3 years bachelor + 1 year master).

Bachelor's degree programs in teaching are organized by a higher education institution (referent establishment) in co-graduation with one or more universities. The University of Namur co-organizes training courses with Hénallux (referent) and UCLouvain, as well as with IMEP for music teaching.

Masters in teaching

If you want to teach secondary 4 to 6 (sections 4 and 5) in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, you'll need to take a master's program in teaching.

UNamur organizes masters 120 in teaching (section 4) and masters 60 in teaching (section 5) in several fields, enabling you to complete your disciplinary curriculum with training in teaching. UNamur is the reference for these courses, which are organized jointly with Hénallux. The master's degree in music teaching section 4 is also organized, in co-graduation with IMEP.

L'épreuve liminaire écrite de maîtrise approfondie de la langue française (EMLF), a compulsory diagnostic test of French language proficiency is scheduled at the beginning of the year for all students enrolling for the first time in section 4 or 5. In the event of failure to pass this test, a 5-credit remedial teaching unit will be added to the EAP.
