The "Crime, Security and Surveillance in the Digital Age (CSS)" unit brings together researchers from CRIDS and the V&S Centre, some of whom are practitioners and most of whom are teachers, around three lines of research: crime, security and surveillance in the digital age.

Hardly a week goes by without reports of elected officials—often depicted as ‘populists’—having used vitriolic language and viciously attacked their opponents. In a context of ‘restyling of politics’, the style of political actors is presented as increasingly emotional and confrontational. Some scholars have argued that these styles directly challenge the democratic functioning of our modern societies. Yet, in the absence of longitudinal studies, such claims remain trivial intuitions and anecdotes that are as old as politics. Do the styles of modern politicians constitute new trends or reflect old habits? What are the factors constraining or favouring certain styles? Against a form of nostalgia for ‘good old times’, this project critically challenges the idea that emotive and confrontational styles are necessarily threats for our contemporary democracies. The central claim of this project is that not all hostility is equal. Conflicts are the democracy’s lifeblood allowing—and even requiring—heated disagreements, including sometimes uncivil and nasty interactions between political adversaries. By contrast, styles founded upon violence and intolerance must be considered as incompatible with the functioning of our pluralistic democracies: such styles transform political adversaries into enemies to be destroyed.

Moved by a fundamental motivation to serve the community and make research results accessible, the Health, Social and Wellbeing Unit (SSBE) has today developed its activities around various human sciences, such as law, psychology, philosophy, economics, etc., and regularly collaborates with players in the so-called hard sciences (medicine, pharmacy, engineering...). Its research focus, like the constant concern for respect for the human person, lends itself more to a broader approach than just the legal framework.The researchers at SSBE examine how societal systems take into account, or fail to take into account, the various forms of vulnerability that can affect individuals or groups, on a one-off or permanent basis. The various norms and systems are thus analyzed in terms of their principles, practices, effectiveness, contradictions, players and developments, with a resolutely forward-looking objective and an important fundamental research dimension.SSBE has developed national and international expertise in the fields of social protection, welfare, psychosocial risks, mental health, equality and non-discrimination, and issues closely or remotely related to public health (patients' rights, aging, disability...), as well as in interdisciplinary research methodology. Special attention is therefore paid to the field of public law (constitutional law and civil liberties, administrative law and criminal law and procedure), and particularly to the individual in his or her relationship with public authority. Various contexts of vulnerability are targeted: terrorism, radicalization, religious minorities, gender discrimination, armed conflicts, incivilities, begging, mental disorders, organized crime, sexual and gender violence, child pornography, cyber harassment, professional secrecy, anti-discrimination, etc.While the Unit is fundamentally rooted in legal science research, and in the field of public law in particular, it is also - like each of the Units that make up the V&S Centre - interdisciplinary and naturally draws on other social sciences to refine its expertise. The permanence of institutional, economic, environmental and migratory tensions is transforming the way our political systems operate. Some of these effects are marginal or conjunctural, but others induce genuine transitions in our models of society over the long term.The Pole Democratic Transformations studies more specifically how these tensions affect modes of governance citizen behavior and the conduct of public action within our political regimes from the local to the international level, via the regional and European levels.

The "Vulnerabilities and Societies" research center brings together members from various UNamur Faculties with the aim of studying the dynamics of vulnerability in our societies.

The transformation of our societies is affecting the construction of our lives and life courses. These are traversed by a dual movement of de-standardization and de-institutionalization, leading to a gradual detachment from social roles, but also to a rise in social, cultural and gender uncertainties and inequalities. The "Transitions and Ages of Life" cluster studies the way in which these life courses are recomposed according to new social constraints and normative imperatives. It thus focuses on the fragility of populations at any age of life, and also on the repercussions of political devices and measures on the construction of life courses.This cluster brings together researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds who analyze both the normative transformations affecting life courses and life-age transitions..

The Chair is dedicated to the study of security, from both traditional and critical approaches. Its axis of rotation is the analysis of safety performance - at cultural, organizational and technological levels - and its relationship to social order. Here, safety is approached primarily from a transdisciplinary angle. This localization of safety, at the intersection of several disciplinary influences, directly structures the theoretical and methodological orientations of the studies conducted within the Chair.
