Learning outcomes

The course is based on the twofold observation that a literary work cannot be separated from the historical circumstances of its appearance and that it structures the history of its time. It aims to provide students with knowledge of the major articulations of French literature and to enable them to situate historically the works that they will have to analyse or explain in the other courses of the speciality

In this first-year course, the emphasis is on the chronological frameworks and the constant characters that determine each century, or each period, of history, rather than on the examination of a particular work, genre, current or author.
