This course aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of organic materials chemistry with an emphasis on the threedimensional molecular aspects of molecules in relation to their physical and chemical properties.
This course aims to provide the necessary foundation to enable students to master the fundamentals of organic chemistry and organic materials.
After a few reminders of organic chemistry, the course will be divided into five main chapters: The first concerns the world of hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes) and aromatic and polyaromatic compounds (graphene, fullerenes, etc.). The second concerns organic molecules including nitrogen, oxygen and other heteroatoms. The third concerns polymers and macromolecules. In the fourth chapter, the main physical and chemical properties and reactivity of the chemical functions will be discussed. In the fifth chapter, an overview of new developments in organic chemistry and materials chemistry will allow us to address current topics: molecular machines, conductive materials and polymeric materials for optics, analytical techniques for organic molecules, properties of organic solvents, etc.
A written examination of 2-3 hours is organised at the end of the year and covers all the chapters covered in the course. The assessment is closed-book and the student will not be allowed to use course materials, documents or other tools during the examination. The written examination is divided into two parts: - In the first part, the student answers a series of exercises (4 to 5) related to the different parts of the course. - The second part is intended for a detailed presentation of a point of the course, in order to evaluate the student's mastery of the subject. A mock exam may be organised, depending on the pace and notions acquired during the year, and the vote of the students participating in the course.
