- develop critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills; - to acquire the techniques of analysis and interpretation of historical sources, as well as a reflective and critical awareness in the practice of the historical approach; - To learn about the implementation of a research question in history and to master the tools and working methods specific to the discipline; - mastering communication by respecting the rules of reference and publication; - acquire a strong capacity for information analysis, synthesis and writing.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to :
- Gain an in-depth understanding of an extract from the work studied by compiling a glossary comprising original definitions or explanations, written by the student with the aid of reference works, specific terms, dates, notable figures and historical or literary references,
- Propose a comprehensive and relevant bibliography on a given subject, adhering to the rules learnt in the course of « Méthodes bibliographiques »,
- Write a concise and well-structured biographical notice on the author of the work studied,
- Write a concise and well-structured account of the context in which the work was produced,
- Apply the principles of external criticism to the work under study,
- Apply the principles of internal criticism to the analysis of an extract from the work under study,
- Write a reasoned synthesis based on texts not covered in the course,
- Integrate the learning outcomes from the courses Méthodes bibliographiques, Critique historique et Initiation à la rédaction d’un travail scientifique.
the attribution criticism of the document (including the author's biography), - an analysis of the document including: - a presentation of the context of production (reasons for the document, the author's objectives and the historical context in which the document was created), - the application of the principles of internal criticism to the document (cf. course in historical criticism), - a bibliography of the work, - an introduction and a conclusion, - write an argumentative summary based on texts not seen in the course, - Integrate the learning outcomes of the Bibliographic Methods, Historical Criticism and Introduction to Writing a Scientific Paper courses.
The main part of this course consists of individual supervision of the students' work and applications. In addition, this practical course includes some joint sessions (which explain the instructions, provide feedback on the students' work and prepare the students for the June examination).
The evaluation is based on both individual work done during the year and a written exam in June, which consists of a written summary based on three texts not seen in the course.
