- understand the thinking of the 6 authors selected - know how to use sociological concepts to analyse empirical material from contemporary societies.
The course has two objectives. It aims to introduce students to sociology and teach them how to actively use the sociological concepts studied to analyse the social world.
The course allows the discovery of the thought of six major authors of sociology around two themes: individual identity (P.Bourdieu, E.Goffman) and the social link (M.Weber, F.Tönnies, J.Godbout and R.Sennett).
The exercises are available on the website: www.sociolog.be Some include answers.
The course is partly given at a distance: students discover the subject by themselves with the reference book. Face-to-face time is reserved for answering questions and doing exercises.
A written examination assesses students on the two objectives defined via a closed-book section testing their knowledge of authors and an open-book section consisting of an exercise (based on those carried out during the course).
