Learning outcomes

Understand the main concepts of evolutionary theory from historical facets to molecular mechanisms. To be able to discuss and argue in groups about evolutionary issues.

Goals

Every biologist must be able to understand the mechanisms of the evolution of species, from an organismic and molecular point of view. This course aims to provide the keys to understanding the modern issues related to the theory of evolution.

Content

This course will delve deeper in to the theories and concepts of evolution. This will include:

  • Natural selection & evolution in a human-modified world
  • Phylogenetics
  • Genomic basis of evolution
  • Mitonuclear interactions & paper discussion
  • Rapid evolution & eco-evolutionary dynamics
  • Sexual selection
  • Predictability of evolution & evolutionary biology of invasions
  • Cultural evolution, niche construction & human evolution
  • Evolutionary thinking and engineering
  • TP - Discussion & reading ‘Origin of species’

Note: some lectures are at UCL. Please make yourself aware of the schedule and locations.

Teaching methods

An oral course based on the professors' powerpoints.

Assessment method

The student will be assessed on his/her evolving written work and the oral seminar he/she will present.
