Learning outcomes

Provide participants with the necessary English language skills to fully enter their professional life. Beyond technical/professional vocabulary and usage, the capacity to fully engage in conversation and work relations in English. The participants learn conversational skills for the work place that require colloquial language, idioms and idiomatic uses, slang and an understanding of cultural contexts and references.

Some areas of more formal language production will also be studied for the work context (email, cv, master thesis, job announcements, interviews, structured report formats, telephone communications, etc.).

Content

The course given in a seminar format will include participant presentations (formal and informal), debates, discussions, role plays, videos, audio exercises etc. dealing with situations and exchanges typical of the work place.

Study of structural elements of English will also form part of the course, verb usage, phrasal verbs, use of prepositions and transitional phrases (moreover, indeed etc.) and so on. The use of formal and informal structures, and the appropriate vocabulary will be presented. 

Assessment method

The final mark will be based on an oral exam, graded class presentation(s) and a written exam. 

The exact modalities of the evaluation are likely to be modified during the preparation of the examination schedules, depending on the practical constraints with which the faculty administration may be confronted, or in the event of illness / force majeure / encroachment with an internship, or because of the health situation related to the coronavirus.
