Learning outcomes

Provide participants with the language skills necessary to fully enter their professional lives. Beyond technical and professional vocabulary and its use, the focus is on the ability to fully engage in workplace conversations and relationships in English. Participants will acquire conversational skills for the workplace, which requires informal language, idioms, and an understanding of cultural contexts and references.

Certain areas of formal language will also be studied in the context of work or academic settings (emails, CVs, job advertisements, interviews, etc.).

Goals

At the end of the Advanced English learning unit, the student will be able to:

  • Formulate their own ideas and arguments in English in a professional context.
  • Engage in a B2+ level conversation in English using appropriate language (informal/professional), idioms, as well as an understanding of cultural and contextual references.

Content

The course, delivered in seminar format, will include presentations by participants (both formal and informal), debates, discussions, role plays, videos, and audio exercises addressing workplace situations and interactions.

Certain structural elements of English will also be part of the course (for example: the use of verbs, prepositions, and transition phrases such as however, in addition, etc.). The use of formal structures and appropriate vocabulary will also be introduced.

Teaching methods

Seminar format with active participation of all those enrolled.

Assessment method

The final mark will be based on an oral exam, a portfolio, a classroom presentation, and a written exam.

The exact assessment arrangements may be subject to change during the scheduling of exams, depending on practical constraints faced by the faculty administration, or in cases such as illness, force majeure, or overlap with an internship, for example.

Important note: please note that successful completion of this course unit does not lead to certification.
