Objectives
At the end of the course, the student who invests in the study of the subject will be able to : • Describe the parts and structures of the central nervous system (CNS) • Identify the main structures on the basis of diagrams, drawings and CT or MRI sections • Describe the general organisation of the CNS • Describe the major functional systems of the CNS • Describe the functions of the structures studied • Describe and identify the topographical relationships between structures • Describe the functional relationships between the structures • Describe the clinical signs that result from injury to a CNS structure/area • Locating a CNS injury based on clinical signs It is highly recommended to practice drawing the main anatomical sections and diagrams of the main functional systems from memory in a schematic way.
Content
The course will detail the structures and anatomical relationships between the different parts of the central nervous system (CNS). In addition to a classical anatomical description (topography, surface anatomy, structures, nuclei), the sectional anatomy of the CNS will be discussed (CT-scanner and MRI). Functional anatomy will allow to make the link between the described structures, their functions and the neurological signs resulting from their damage. The subject will be approached longitudinally (systematic and topographical description of structures) and transversally (major functional systems: motor, somatosensory, visual, etc.).
Written examination by MCQ.
The exact modalities of the evaluation are subject to change when the examination timetable is drawn up, depending on the practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in the event of illness/force majeure/emergency with a placement/internship, preventing the student from taking the examination on the date initially scheduled.
