Learning outcomes

In reading comprehension (B2): Can read with a high degree of autonomy, adapting mode and speed of reading to different texts and purposes, and using appropriate references selectively. Possesses a wide and active reading vocabulary, but may have difficulty with less frequent expressions.
 
In written production (B1+ - above B1): Can write simply articulated texts on a range of topics in one's field of study, linking a series of elements in a linear sequence. Can report on experience, describing feelings and reactions in simply articulated texts. Can write reports in conventional standard form that convey routine factual information and justify actions.
 
 

Goals

The aim of the course is to develop the student's B2 level in the English language, focusing on receptive and productive written skills. At the end of the course, students will be able to process materials related to their field of specialization in order to write a research article abstract/summary etc.

Content

The themes covered in the course will be those necessary for processing scientific articles and writing scientific abstracts.
 
Written comprehension will be worked on by using authentic documents (simplified or not) on specialized subjects. Students will gradually become familiar with "Scientific English".
 
Written production will be worked on through written tasks throughout the year, with the aim of producing an OpEd/a scientific summary/abstract.
 

Teaching methods

The course is given face-to-face and in small groups.

Assessment method

The assessment will take place during the semester and will include a vocabulary/grammar test (50%) and two in-class written productions (50%)

If the student fails to achieve a minimum of 10/20 for their final grade, they will have to resit each failed part of the class i.e the test and/or the written production (production which will be only one and not two then)
