Learning outcomes

The student will have learned to apply the concepts of physics and chemistry taught in the framework of the teaching units SPHY B112, SPHY B113, SPHY B114, SCHI B103, SCHI B106 to living animals. They will be able to explain the physical and/or chemical basis of a situation encountered in a living animal, such as the transmission of an electrical signal during a nerve impulse or the impact of pulmonary gas exchange on blood pH.

Goals

Understand and apply basic physics and chemistry in the living world. Establish links between materials, including those essential for understanding the structures involved in the physical or chemical phenomena studied.

Content

Applications of chemistry and physics to the living animal.

Assessment method

The assessment covers all the applications considered during the learning activities (auditorium activities and self learning activities based on the online cases ).

The end-of-period assessment comprises two steps:

A written test: The student must answer on questions on key concepts directly related to the course. This written test contains short answer questions. Examples will be provided during the four-month period so that students can practise and understand which are these essential concepts.

 2. An oral test: After familiarising him/herself with the subject to be developed, the student prepares a written response that applies chemistry and physics concepts to the proposed situation. The written response contains, among other things, a diagram, physics or chemistry formulas specifically applied to the case, and a drawing of the concerned structures, applying the physics and chemistry concepts into context. After this written preparation phase, the student presents his/her answer orally to two examiners (one veterinary teacher + one chemistry or physics teacher) and answers the examiners' questions.

To take part at the oral test, students must have succesfully passed the written test, i.e. they must have a sufficient knowledge of the essential elements. If the student does not have a sufficient knwledge of the essentials, he/she will not be allowed to take part to the oral test. Their final score will then be less than 7/20.
