By the end of the course, students should be able to:
read a paragraph/text and demonstrate an understanding of that paragraph/text;
listen to a video (e.g. a news item) and demonstrate an understanding of the information (main and detailed) in the video;
write an essay (opstel) on a subject related to the themes covered during the year, observing the rules of grammar, using appropriate vocabulary and ensuring the structure and coherence of his/her argument;
give an oral presentation of an article prepared in advance;
demonstrate mastery of vocabulary and grammar rules in tests and in practising the above skills.
The aim of the course is to develop your oral and written communication skills in your specialist field, based on the basic vocabulary and grammar covered in Dutch 1.
In view of the different levels of knowledge and ability in Dutch, differentiated teaching is organised.
At the beginning of the academic year, a diagnostic test is organised to take into account the level of each student.
The Dutch 2 course has several objectives:
to review basic grammar and vocabulary (2000 most frequent words) ;
to develop a command of vocabulary specific to your field of study;
demonstrate mastery of grammar and vocabulary in the various skills at the desired level: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression (with or without interaction);
develop critical and argumentative thinking;
develop your autonomy in relation to your learning (in general, and your learning of Dutch in particular);
develop certain cross-curricular skills: stress management, communication, deadline management, etc.
This course aims to achieve level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, in all skills.
Course materials and content will vary according to level. Specific materials will be used for beginner and (super) advanced levels.
Most materials will be available on Webcampus.
The content per level is specified in the learning calendar (Leerkalender).
An online diagnostic test is organised at the beginning of the academic year with the sole aim of placing students in the level that suits them best. This diagnostic test covers three important aspects of the course: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and mastery of the necessary linguistic tools (basic grammar and vocabulary).
The 4 skills will be assessed: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral expression.
During the year, 2 tests will be organised to check mastery of the following elements: grammar, vocabulary + reading/listening comprehension.
The oral exam will take place out of term, during the last class sessions. Written expression will be assessed outside the session, during the last lesson.
In order to develop autonomy in their learning, students must keep a learning diary. This must be handed in at the end of the year.
Any part not presented or any unjustified absence from a part of the assessment will result in a mark of 1/20 for the whole course.
For the August session, if the overall course average does not reach 10/20, each student will repeat the parts for which they did not obtain 10/20.
