Learning outcomes

This course aims to master the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, focusing on the acquisition of fundamental legal vocabulary. It includes a review of English structures, grammar, and vocabulary through the reading of texts and listening to authentic legal audio materials. The course also seeks to expand receptive legal vocabulary with a view towards specialization.

Goals

The priority of “bloc 1” is to enable each student to be confirmed at the end of “bloc 1” at a B2 level in the skills selected for the Baccalaureate degree exit profile.

Content

The course involves working with written and audio documents in English. These documents are authentic texts and audio materials with a legal focus. The aims are: (i) to master reading comprehension of texts; (ii) to master listening comprehension of audio documents; (iii) to acquire basic legal vocabulary (receptive mode only); and (iv) to understand common grammatical structures. To a lesser extent, the course includes oral expression to improve communication and interaction in English, up to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Teaching methods

Beginning of the Year:

DIAGNOSTIC TEST: A diagnostic test is available on Webcampus, assessing skills such as reading comprehension, listening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar according to CEFR descriptors. The results of this test are purely indicative.

Based on the test results, students may be paired (an intermediate student with a more advanced student). Various differentiated exercises will be offered throughout the semester, leveraging the complementary strengths of the partners during these activities.

However, the subjects to be mastered by the end of the term are identical for ALL students.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for the English course are aligned with level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. The English course, held in the first term, is a practical course that requires prior preparation by the student. Wherever possible, the teacher will communicate in English to maximize the student's exposure to the target language.

Assessment method

The final examination will assess:

(i) contextual understanding of the vocabulary covered during the course, including that in the course notes and Webcampus glossaries;
(ii) contextual understanding of the grammar points studied;
(iii) reading and listening comprehension of texts and audio materials discussed in class; and
(iv) reading and listening comprehension of texts and audio materials not covered in class but related to topics discussed during the course.

The examination is the same for both level groups. It can be retaken during the June and August sessions, with the same modalities.
