Intended for students who have followed a full course of Latin in secondary school (4 hours per week in 5e and 6e), as well as for students who have completed Lecture de textes latins (LCLA B007), the objectives of this course are the independent reading of long Latin texts, the mastery of the grammatical notions necessary for this, and the elaboration of a commentary (textual, literary and historical) on these texts.
The course is devoted to the reading of extended passages from the work of an ancient Latin author or a neo-Latin author (from the humanist period onwards). After explaining any grammatical difficulties and outlining any problems in establishing the text, the teacher works with the students to produce a literary translation, emphasising the techniques and methods to be used. The commentary explains the realia, highlights the stylistic and literary construction of the text and its historical significance.
The unit is the subject of a 25-minute oral examination (preceded by one hour's preparation). This exam covers the material from the lecture (translation, grammatical analysis and commentary) and the passage translated independently by the student (translation, grammatical analysis, explanation of the realia).
Text files (including 'non-basic' vocabulary) are distributed by the teacher throughout the year and are made available to students on Webcampus, as are the PowerPoint presentations that accompany the course.
