Learn to read and communicate in at least one language other than French. Acquire a strong capacity for information analysis, synthesis and writing. To train in critical thinking and scientific reasoning.
Intended for students who have completed a full course of Latin in secondary school (4 hours per week in 5th and 6th grade), as well as for students who have successfully completed Reading Latin Texts (LCLA B007), the objectives of this course are the independent reading of long Latin texts, the mastery of the grammatical notions necessary for this purpose, and the elaboration of a commentary (textual, literary and historical) on these texts.
The teaching is devoted to the reading of extended passages from the work of a Latin author of Antiquity or a Neo-Latin author (from the humanist period onwards). After explaining grammatical difficulties and pointing out possible problems in establishing the text, the teacher works out a literary translation with the students, emphasising the techniques and methods to be used. The commentary explains the realia, highlights the stylistic and literary construction of the text and its historical significance
The unit is subject to a 25-minute oral examination (preceded by 1 hour of preparation). This exam covers the lecture material (translation, grammatical analysis and commentary) and the passage translated independently by the student (translation, grammatical analysis and explanation of content).
Text files (including 'non-basic' vocabulary) are distributed throughout the year by the teacher, and are made available to the student on Webcampus, as are the PowerPoint presentations that accompany the course.
