Several researchers at the Namur Institute of Structured Matter (NISM) have recently been awarded funding from the F.R.S - FNRS following calls whose results were published in December 2024. The NISM Institute federates the research activities of the chemistry and physics departments of the University of Namur.

How can teleworking and face-to-face work be reconciled? How can these professional practices be framed to reinforce the innovative and sustainable dimensions of hybrid work? These are the questions that Michel Ajzen, a specialist in organizational management, is tackling as part of his teaching assignments in the Department of Management Sciences at UNamur. His research focuses on hybrid work and organizational innovation, with a transdisciplinary approach aimed at reinventing managerial practices to meet contemporary challenges.

Floriane Goosse, a PhD student at the University of Namur, within the NaDI-CeRCLe research center, has received the prestigious "Best Research Paper Award" for her thesis paper conducted in collaboration with Wafa Hammedi, professor in the Department of Management at UNamur, and Dominik Mahr, from Maastricht University.

will take place from September 2 to 6, 2024 at the Gîte du domaine d'Haugimont (owned by the University of Namur) and will deal with medieval manuscripts in their material and historical aspects (parchment and ink manufacture). The event is aimed at historians, archaeologists and researchers in the physical and chemical sciences. Participation is free for doctoral students attached to FNRS doctoral schools in the disciplines concerned. At the crossroads of archaeology, history and the exact sciences, this colloquium-workshop will give the floor to three speakers (a physicist, a chemist and a historian) who will present the interdisciplinary research they are conducting together in this field. Workshops on parchment reproduction, inks and writing materials will be held each day.More information on the event .

Research at NISM is identified by four poles, which highlight the main scientific activities carried out within the institute. Each pole has a well-defined structure with members, and is managed by the pole representative. The structuring does not prevent ongoing cooperation between them. Indeed, there is well-established interaction between the various clusters, through joint projects, conferences, seminars, co-supervision of master's and doctoral theses, among others..

The Nonlinear Optics and Photonics cluster (NOP) develops experimental, theoretical and numerical research in various fields of optics, mainly in nonlinear optics and photonics, including plasmonics and quantum optics.

The expertise of the Functional Structured Materials (FSM) pole is divided into two interconnected areas: the development of 3D porous architectures and the functionalization of nanostructures.

The Surfaces, Interfaces and Carbon Nanostructures (SICN) pole is active in the synthesis, characterization and modeling of new materials, with a particular focus on interfaces between two distinct phases and for low-carbon materials.

For their research activities, NISM Institute researchers rely on technology platform teams, each of which houses state-of-the-art equipment, technical know-how and cutting-edge expertise. They are accessible to the scientific community as well as to industry.

The Institute's research projects, publications and collaborations include all categories of researchers. Led by academic promoters, they mobilize post-doctoral researchers, PhD students and even master's students (student-researchers).
