Learning outcomes

- Mastery of the major frameworks of the history of Latin literature of antiquity (chronology, historical and cultural context, genres); knowledge of the biography and work of the major authors. - Development of literary analysis skills.

Goals

• To provide students with encyclopaedic knowledge of ancient Latin literature: chronological framework, literary genres, authors, works, etc. • To introduce students to the literary analysis of ancient Latin works or extracts.

Content

Based on the personal reading of a textbook and Latin works (in translation), the teaching unit consists on the one hand of a series of synthetic chapters (on the different periods of the literary history of Rome, on the main authors, the evolution of the different genres, etc.), and on the other hand of the analysis of extracts from works read in translation during the course.

Assessment method

The unit is examined in writing in June.

Sources, references and any support material

The material covered in the course is presented in PowerPoint files which will be made available to students on Webcampus at the end of each session. Additional files may be distributed to students during the course of the term. Students must read the following textbook on their own (according to a progression indicated at the beginning of the term): • H. Zehnacker, J.-Cl. Fredouille, Littérature latine (Collection Quadrige Manuels), PUF, Paris, 2013, 544 pages. A reading list (in translation) of ancient Latin works or parts of works is given at the beginning of the course.
