Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, the student should be able to understand the roles and functions of the main metabolic actors and pathways involved in the different mechanisms of intercellular communication as well as within specific organs. The same learning should be acquired for the blood system (in particular erythrocytes and thrombocytes). The second part (15 h) is devoted to the biochemical description of certain pathologies: diabetes, dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis, pathologies of hemostasis.

The objective of this course is to understand the roles and functions of the main biochemical metabolic actors and pathways involved in the different physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms.

Content

Partim I (45h) General notions of human biochemistry: -Chapter 1: Overview of the different metabolic pathways -Chapter 2: Intercellular communication -Chapter 3. Digestive absorption -Chapter 4. Blood -Chapter 5. The liver Partim II (15h) The understanding of biochemical dysfunctional patterns leading to certain frequently encountered pathologies. Elements of clinical biology essential for diagnosis will be discussed. Four themes will be proposed and discussed: Diabetes - Hemostasis pathologies - Dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis.

Assessment method

Written examination with long and short open questions and MCQs. The exact modalities of the assessment are subject to change when the examination timetable is being drawn up, depending on practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in case of illness/force majeure/emergency with a placement, or because of the health situation related to the coronavirus.
