Intellectual Property (IP) rights and titles play a critical, sensitive and controversial role in the life sciences and in particular in the pharmaceutical sector. At the end of the course, the student will have an overview of IP rights and titles as well as the impacts and challenges of IP in the field of biotechnology and health. The student will also have acquired more specific knowledge on the patent system and patentability in the life sciences. Finally, the student will be trained in the use of resources available from IP offices.
The objective of this course is to introduce the concept of intellectual property (IP) and the different IP titles, in particular patents, in the context of the life sciences and the pharmaceutical sector. The objective will also be to train students in the use of resources available to further investigate these concepts and consult patent databases.
The course will introduce the concepts and definitions related to intellectual property (IP) and IP titles and rights, then it will be mainly devoted to the presentation of the patent system as well as its stakes and particularities in the field of biotechnologies and health.
