Mutual insurance
Insurance is mandatory for long stays.
Sometimes, your scholarship agreement includes coverage for all your medical expenses. If not, you must choose health insurance or supplementary health insurance. There are public mutual insurance companies in Belgium.
By default, we can direct you to La Mutualité Neutre (formerly Munalux): rue des Dames Blanches, 24 (081/25.07.60 - https://www.lamn.be/).
Requirements for health insurance:
- Certificate of registration from the town hall;
- ID card or passport;
- employment or scholarship contract;
bank account number. - In order to update your details, when you are in possession of your residence permit, we recommend that you present it to your bank.
Membership fees are approximately 9.50 euros per month. You will receive an invoice, documents and a sheet of identity stickers by post.
The stickers provided are required for reimbursement of medical expenses. The amount varies according to the type of examination. For an appointment with a general practitioner, you will recover around 70% of the amount paid; reimbursement percentages vary in the case of various medical prescriptions, more specific examinations or hospitalization. When you decide to leave Belgium, you must inform the mutualité.

General rules
When you consult a doctor, the cost of the examination may be covered by your health insurance. Currently, some GPs send this attestation directly to the mutualité via an online platform. In this case, you no longer need to bring this document to your mutualité.
Mutualité members in Belgium must present this supporting document to the mutualité in order to be reimbursed. Amounts vary according to the type of examination (70% for an examination by a general practitioner).
Members of other health insurance systems must send the voucher to the insurance company to be reimbursed. See conditions in insurance or grant contract.

Health cards
Health card
In Belgium, there is no health card in the strict sense of the term. Your identity card or electronic residence permit acts as your health card. There is, however, a document for children or residents who have chosen to have a paper residence permit, as well as a European health insurance card that covers residents when traveling in Europe.
ISI+ card
This card is intended for children under 12 and young people and adults who do not have the electronic card. This card must be presented in health-related procedures: pharmacy, hospital, medical center...
You must request it from your Mutuelle (health insurance). This card is only valid on Belgian territory. For health interventions outside Belgium, you must use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), also available on request from your Mutuelle.
European Health Insurance Card
Before traveling in Europe, you must request this free card from your health insurance fund. It is valid for the current calendar year and is personal to you; you must apply for a separate card for each member of your family.
