He will have acquired a basic knowledge of the grammar of the classical language, allowing him to translate simple sentences and to recognize recurrent formulas in the texts.
The teaching unit is intended for beginners. The objectives are mainly to teach the student to apprehend Egyptian hieroglyphic texts by using the instruments at his disposal such as lists of signs, grammars, dictionaries. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between the text and the monument on which it is affixed.
The teaching unit, which consists of thirteen lessons, provides an introduction to the context of hieroglyphic writing. The second part focuses on the principles of writing, which are taught with the help of exercises. The main principles of grammar (noun, adjective, pronoun, verb forms and sentence type) are studied with the help of simple texts.
