At the end of this course, students will have the necessary basis for the more specific biology courses of the bachelor in biology
Through a progressive approach, students will have the opportunity to rediscover the basics of biology seen in secondary school and to acquire new notions that will be essential for them to pursue their bachelor's degree
The EU SBIOB131 includes two learning activities: theory (36h) and practical work (27h). The theoretical part is divided into 2 parts. Part 1, given by Régis Hallez, will deal with the first 9 chapters of the reference book "Biology (5th edition, Raven)" relating to the molecular and cellular bases of life Part 2, given by Jean-Yves Matroule, will focus on the foundations of formal genetics and the basic notions of molecular genetics through chapters 10 to 15 of the reference book "Biology (5th edition, Raven)". The practical component aims to assess technical skills and the application of the scientific approach. The assessment of the practical component is continuous. Each session will be graded /20. The practical work mark will be the average of all these marks out of 5. Participation in the practical sessions is compulsory. Any unjustified absence will result in a mark of 0 for that session. In case of failure of the continuous assessment, a practical examination will be organised during the examination session (the assessment of the practical work can take place out of session in order not to overload the session). However, access to the practical examination will only be allowed to students who have followed all the practical sessions during the term.
Evaluation of the theoretical component The evaluation of the theory will consist of a written examination of 30 multiple choice and/or open questions. In this exam, 18 questions will deal with the material covered in part 1 (Régis Hallez) and 12 questions will deal with the material covered in part 2 (Jean-Yves Matroule). There will be only one mark for the theoretical part. Partial exemptions for one or the other part are therefore not possible. Exceptional measures on the theoretical side in 2021-2022 Students who have failed SBIOB111 and SBIOB112 in 2020-2021 will be required to retake the whole of the SBIOB131 assessment. Students who failed in 2020-2021 in the SBIOB111 EU and not in the SBIOB112 EU will only represent the part of Régis Hallez Students who failed in 2020-2021 in the SBIOB112 EU and not in the SBIOB111 EU will only represent the part of JeanYves Matroule Evaluation of the practical component The assessment of the practical work will account for 25% of the final mark Exceptional measures for practical work in 2021-2022 Students who have obtained at least a mark of 1/2 in the practical work in the general biology course in 2020-2021 will benefit from an exemption from the practical work in the SBIOB131 course in 2021-2022 Exemptions and deferrals The success of the theory and the practical part is required to validate the UE SBIOB131. In case of failure of the theory or the practical part (even if the final mark is equal or superior to 10/20), the mark obtained for the EU SBIOB131 will correspond to the mark of the failed part. However, in this case, the student will only have to retake the failed part in the second session or in the following academic year.
