Learning outcomes

The course addresses the modeling of information systems through the database paradigm. It teach the student to rationally express typical problem situations in an appropriate formalism: data structures as tables, queries as SQL2 statements, semantic information structures as Entity-relationship schemas.
This course also is an introduction to databases.

Content

Part 1 - Concepts of relational databases. Elements of SQL language.
Part 2 - Database methodology. Basic Entity-relationship model. Building an Entity-relationship model. Producing a database schema.

Assessment method

Three aspects are evaluated: theoretical and technical knowledge, ability to combine knowledge from various parts of the course and the capacity to solve practical problems. The written examination is 3 hour long. Books and personal notes are not allowed.
