Referring to its press releases of 20 February and 3 March, the Rectors’ Council of the French-speaking universities of Belgium expresses its deepest concern at the increasing severity of the attacks on academic freedom in the United States. The arbitrary arrest of students solely for publicly expressing their opinions, the government’s control of university research centers, and, lastly, the punitive reduction of subsidies to university institutions that promote values displeasing to the executive branch constitute, in our view, extremely serious interference by the political authorities in academic freedom. CRef denounces these practices, which have no place in a state governed by the rule of law and expresses its support and solidarity with the institutions and individuals targeted by these scandalous measures.
