This course is intended for master's level biologists. Its objectives are to explain the different stages in the formation of a soil and its colonisation by vegetation. To make students aware of the problem of soil erosion and degradation.
The course consists of three parts: - the first part describes the constituents of a soil (minerals, organic matter, water, air) and the degradation processes of the mother rock (according to its mineralogical composition and climatic conditions); - the second part explains the evolution phenomena leading to the notion of horizons and pedological profiles; - the third part defines the risks of erosion and degradation of the soils linked to the cultivation practices Finally, the student is introduced to the study and interpretation of soil maps.
Using a geological and pedological map and the explanatory booklet, the student must be able to illustrate the theoretical notions seen in the course and characterise the soils of a region of Wallonia.
