Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to understand mass spectrometry and separative techniques (GC, HPLC, CE).

Goals

Drug analysis is based on the use of various analytical methods and equipment (spectrophotometers, chromatography, etc.). The aim of this course is to present a range of analytical techniques applied primarily to the assay of active ingredients and drugs.

Content

Description of prerequisites

Part I: Mass spectrometry

Part II: Separative methods
  • Introduction to chromatography
  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Gas chromatography (GC)
  • Capillary electrophoresis (CE)

Part III: Introduction to sample preparation

Exercices

Exercices and tutorial problems are given to illustrate different analytical methods, mainly applied to assay of active ingredients and drugs. They are given in parallel to the theoretical course.

Assessment method

The examination is written. It will consist of theory and exercise questions. The exact modalities of the assessment are subject to change when the examination timetable is being drawn up, depending on practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in case of illness/force majeure/emergency, or because of the health situation related to the coronavirus.
