Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able to know the main molecules of the different pharmacological classes of organic drugs (INN, chemical structure, some trade names) as well as their mechanism of action (in relation with their structure-activity). Toxicology, pharmacology and pharmacovigilance are also covered.

Goals

The objectives of the course are to familiarise the student with the active ingredients of drugs, their chemical structures, their origin and their field of use. Biosynthetic drugs will not be covered.

Content

All classes of drugs will be reviewed with a particular focus on the most common and/or recent drugs or pharmacological classes. Within each class, a description of the origin, design, evolution and field of application of the main molecules will be given. Some examples of synthesis and physicochemical properties will be provided.

Assessment method

Written examination (open and short questions). The exact modalities of the assessment are subject to change when the examination timetable is being drawn up, depending on practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in case of illness/force majeure/emergency with a placement, or because of the health situation related to the coronavirus.
