After an introduction to cellular physiology, the student will learn the functioning of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. They will be able to describe the function, role and regulation of each system.
They will have learned the basic investigative methods to evaluate the proper functioning of each system.
Know the location, structure, function, roles and regulation of the major physiological systems.
Be able to integrate a given system into the organism and to reason about its functioning.
Understand basic cellular physiological mechanisms and be able to integrate them into the study of physiological systems.
Partie Dennis (in English):
1. Membranes, canals and transport
2. Physiology of neuron function
3. Nerve communication
4. Muscles and movements
Partie Bossaert
5. Cardiovascular physiology
6. Respiratory physiology
Tutorials and/or practical work are devoted to each chapter of the course.
The course is mainly lecture-based. Some parts can be pre-recorded via powerpoints commented by the teachers.
Some points may be developed on the basis of scientific articles or book chapters. The student may be asked to read these articles for the course, or to discuss them in groups.
The tutorials and practical work will be organized in groups according to an established schedule. Students will have prepared these sessions from the course notes and (for some practical sessions) a textbook. Participation in tutorials and practical work is mandatory and is an integral part of the course, even if the student is awaiting validation of his or her EAP.
Evaluation will be based on end of semester exams. The exams will be both oral (Bossaert part) and written (Dennis part)
Lecture notes are slides that the student can download a printable pdf version of via WebCampus.
Lecture notes (pdf of slides shown in class) and lab manuals are available via WebCampus.
