Biography

Nathalie Colette-Basecqz was born in Namur on 18 November 1969.

After completing her humanities studies at the Institut Notre-Dame de Loverval, she went on to study law at the Facultés Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix in Namur. She then continued her studies at the Catholic University of Louvain.

From 1 October 1992 until September 2006, she was an assistant in the criminology and criminal law department of the Faculty of Law at UCL. She has also been a guest lecturer at UCL (from 1997 to 1999, from 2007 to 2008 and from 2009 to 2012).

She has a PhD in Law (on 4 July 2007, she defended a doctoral thesis at UCL on the subject of ‘Le statut juridique du déficient mental auteur de dommages confronté à plusieurs droits fondamentaux. Etude de droit comparé anglais, belge et français").

She is an extraordinary professor at the University of Namur, where she has taught criminal law and the law of criminal procedure on a daytime basis since September 2006, and on a part-time basis since 2017. From 2008 to 2017, she directed the seminar focusing on the humanities, and from 2011 to 2017, she taught the criminal humanitarian law course as part of the Master's specialisation in human rights.

She has practised as a lawyer since 1 October 1992. She is a member of the Walloon Brabant Bar.

She is also a member of the editorial boards of the Revue de Droit Pénal et de Criminologie and the Revue de Droit de la Santé.

She is a member of the ‘Vulnérabilités & Sociétés’ research centre and the ‘Transitions’ Institute. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of ADANam (Association des Anciens de la Faculté de Droit de Namur).

Her main research areas are criminal law, criminal procedure law, medical law and international criminal law. She is the author of several publications in these fields.
