- The course aims to enable the student to understand the legal mechanisms that organise intellectual property, and to master the basic rules.
- It helps the student to project himself in concrete situations which require a rigorous and creative application of the theoretical rules.

 

Content

There are many intellectual property rights and their complexity is increasing. The course cannot deal with all the intellectual rights nor with the details of each protection.
A brief general introduction explains the nature of intellectual property rights, the different objects that can be protected by them and some principles common to all of them.
The main focus of the course is on patents and trade secrets, but other intellectual rights relevant to the researcher, in particular copyright, are also covered. For each of these rights, the aim is to understand, in particular, the general logic of protection, the purpose of protection, access and the scope of protection. It includes highly practical aspects in this respect.
In general, the course focuses on an EU and international perspective.

Assessment method

- Subject to modification according to circumstances, the examination is oral and takes place in person or by distance learning.
- It takes place in May-June and/or in August-September; if necessary, it takes place outside the session.
-The content of the examination is designed to check whether the student has integrated the learning outcomes. In particular, the questions are designed to assess respectively (i) the accuracy in the restitution of solutions and in the analysis of documents (ii) the discernment (iii) the sense of synthesis (iv) the quality and the articulation of the reasoning (v) the capacity to put into practice and the situation.
-The final score is not purely arithmetical and depends on the teachers' overall assessment of the paper or performance. It may also take into account the student's participation during the term.
