Learning outcomes

• acquire theoretical knowledge in the fields of media history and sociology; • acquire a critical and analytical view of the evolution and functioning of the media (in relation to the political sphere, professional issues and the cultural field); • be able to consider different views on the social role of the media.

Goals

The course aims to present the major technical, social, political and economic evolutions of the media and the related sociological views.

Content

The course will be structured around three chapters: media and the political sphere; media, public space and social movements; media, art, literature and culture. In each chapter, sociological and historical elements will be presented by the teachers. This will be followed by a case analysis (to be carried out first in class and then outside the class). The course will end with a debate to cross the different dimensions of media instances.

Assessment method

Closed course written examination. The student will be tested both on the course material and on the content of the interviews with the guest speakers.
