The aim of this course is to enable the acquisition of statistical tools with a view to their future use by an economist. Particular emphasis is placed on: 1. the mastery of a limited number of statistical concepts, 2. the rigorous formulation of precise problems, 3. the reasoned choice of a solution method, and 4. the critical interpretation of results.
To develop useful statistical skills based on an understanding of the fundamental principles of statistics and probability. The emphasis is on understanding the principles and their applications, rather than on a catalogue of formulae to be used.
The course is an introduction to statistics. It consists of three main parts: (1) descriptive statistics, (2) probability analysis, and (3) statistical inference about means and proportions.
