The material taught in the General Anatomy I, II and III course of the Baccalaureate in Medicine at the University of Namur must be acquired in order to study topographical anatomy successfully.
The aim of topographical anatomy is to determine the spatial arrangement of the organs and the anatomical relationships between them in a particular region of the normal human body. Cadaver dissection sessions are designed to teach basic surgical skills and give students the opportunity to observe in reality the anatomical structures they have previously studied in theory. The student must demonstrate minimal skill and be able to locate anatomical structures on an embalmed body.
Topographical anatomy and dissection in the regions: head and neck; thorax; abdomen; pelvis and perineum; upper and lower limb.
The theoretical examination of topographical anatomy is done in writing, with closed books; it is corrected by P. Garin. Students who arrive at the time and date indicated in the examination notice, and who sign their paper without answering, receive an "attendance mark". Students who do not attend at the time and date specified are marked "absent". Practical dissection work is graded by A. Rosière on the basis of the daily work and the final examination at the end of the second term; the grades given during the year on the progress of the practical work by the medical assistants present at the dissection are also used. The two parts cannot be split: for example, it is not possible to take the dissection exam without being registered for the theory exam in the same session. The final mark is the arithmetic average of the two marks (theory/dissection) unless one of the two marks is less than 10.00/20, in which case the final mark may not exceed 9.00/20. This provision is intended to prevent some students from skipping one of the two components of the course. An exception may be made by mutual agreement of the holders if the average of the two marks is 13.50/20 or higher. However, the exact modalities of the assessment are subject to change when the examination timetable is drawn up, depending on the practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in the event of illness/force majeure/employment with a placement, preventing the student from taking the examination on the date initially scheduled.
Various treatises on topographical anatomy (in book form or on computer media) are available for free consultation in the library of the Anatomy Laboratory, where numerous collection items and demonstrative preparations are also on display.
